6 Gentle Steps to Live the Sweetest Creative Life

imagine this: a quiet afternoon with birdsong and sunlight pooling across the table as softly as honey over warm bread. A warm cup of tea resting between your hands while the steam curls upward like a little cloud. The sound of a spoon gently tapping the side of a mug, and the feeling of grass brushing against your bare feet. There is toast crunching beneath your teeth, butter melting into every golden pore while strawberry jam gathers in glossy red pools along the edges. There is no need to rush toward anything yet. The day is still pale and half-asleep, and the soothing scent of lavender is drifting through the air.

moments like these seem so ordinary, and yet they can make each day taste so generously sweet.

and this is the sort of sweetness I crave: the sticky, buttery, slightly excessive sweetness of actually tasting your own life. The kind that leaves jam on your fingertips and crumbs on the table, that makes you stop halfway because the little flowers on the sidewalk have become too beautiful to ignore.

in this article, I am exploring 5 gentle steps to live a sweeter life, to help you return to your inspired, creative self again ✧・゚:*

1. choose delicious ingredients

try thinking of your day as a cake that’s slowly being baked, full of ingredients that are constantly being added to the mixture. there are ingredients you’d naturally want more of: a cake made with fresh vanilla, creamy butter, ripe berries, and caramel melting into the edges can make the entire room smell a little sweeter. and then there are ingredients that leave a strange aftertaste, that somehow manage to make the whole thing taste slightly burnt.

in the same way, our day begins to feel different when we gently choose what we allow into it, as a sweet life is built from sweet little ingredients.

when something repeatedly leaves your days tasting bitter, begin gently taking less of it into your life and replacing it with something that feels more comforting, like warm honey poured over toast. try to give yourself more of what you already know you love. for the cake to still taste sweet, you do not have to eliminate every unpleasant ingredient, because that sounds exhausting. Sometimes you make it sweeter by quietly removing the things that have been burning at the bottom of the pan, by becoming familiar with your own aftertaste. A very effective way of doing this is making two little lists.

think of this as writing a little kitchen inventory.

the first list might contain things like clutter, resentment, comparison, poor sleep, dehydration, endless news, overworking, fear, stress, too much social media, negative thinking, ignoring your own feelings, staying somewhere that continually makes you shrink.

the second list is much more delicious: Fresh vegetables. Berries. Warm soup. Cold water. Deep sleep. Prayer and Gratitude. Sunlight. Trees. Birdsong. A peaceful room. Clean laundry. Opening the windows. A walk outside. Making something with your hands. Learning something new.

to understand what drains you and to nurture what feeds you is the first step towards your dream life.

2. harvest Your Angel Energy

the other day, I looked at my handwriting and realised how little my hand has changed since childhood. The letters still look almost exactly the same, only now they sometimes spell out exams, deadlines, and other grown-up things, too. And yet, when I draw, it is still this same little hand holding the pencil, drawing the same little worlds, carrying the same child through all these years. I love this quote from David Lynch: “Inside, we are ageless”, and I find that thought strangely comforting.

somewhere underneath all the layers of adulthood, there is always this little creature. she is not particularly interested in your five-year plan. she does not care about appearing sophisticated. She just wants to lie on the grass, to stare at a snail, to know why the moon follows the car, to eat the creamiest spoonful of choco mousse. i think that no matter where we are, we can always harvest this part of us that gets excited about tiny things.

this childlike spirit is what I like to call angel energy. It is the feeling of moving through the world with your senses wide open, of letting yourself be delighted by every little wonder life has to offer.

Here are some of my tips to harvest this particular energy:

focus on the little things that genuinely nourish you, like the afternoon light pouring through the curtains, warm as melted butter and pale as vanilla cream, leaving little golden puddles across the floor.

make something with your hands simply because you enjoy the sensation of making it, enjoy the sound of pencil against paper, soft and dry and deliciously scratchy, like the first crack through the sugared crust of a crème brûlée.

notice the scent of crushed strawberries, sunlight slipping through the trees in thick ribbons of honey, and the clouds drifting lazily overhead, enormous and pillowy, like dollops of whipped cream slowly melting across a blueberry sky.

follow your senses when something smells wonderful, like the warmth of fresh bread escaping from the bakery door, buttery and yeasty and golden enough to make the entire street feel edible.

buy the peach that feels heaviest and ripest in your hand, cut open in the afternoon, its flesh impossibly soft and juice dripping down the wrist, smelling of warm sunlight and jam.

eat the fruit when it is at its sweetest and let yourself actually taste it, like the first strawberries of summer, red and glossy and almost indecently sweet, their juice staining the fingertips pink.

pay attention to the tiny creatures that appear throughout your day, like the little bird landing on the fence, round and puffed up like a cinnamon bun left to cool beside an open window.

collect little pieces of beauty from ordinary walks, like a tiny patch of moss glowing between stones, impossibly green and soft-looking, like pistachio cream hidden inside the cracks of the earth.

plant flowers generously and let them grow into one another, like flowers spilling over the edges of a garden bed, pink and yellow and cream, so abundant they look less planted than poured.

take walks where you can smell the earth and the trees, enjoy the silver sprinkles of rain tapping against leafs, shaking loose the smell of moss, bark, and wet grass.

after a summer storm, go outside and take in the whole freshly washed world, look closely at the plants, dripping and green and glossy with droplets, every leaf shining like it had been dipped in clear sugar syrup.

look for the tiny flowers that appear in places nobody planned for them, like a field of daisies under a pale blue sky, little white petals scattered everywhere like someone had torn open a bag of sugared confetti.

take the longer route home when the autumn streets are covered in colour, notice the leaves spinning through the air, cinnamon-brown and caramel-gold, leaving the pavement scattered with little copper pastries.

pair two tiny pleasures together and let them make an entire moment of themselves, like the sound of pages turning and the smell of warm cocoa at the same time.. two of the smallest luxuries in the world, enough to make an afternoon feel complete.

wear the clothes that make you happiest at home, like a cardigan pulled around your shoulders, thick and pillowy, smelling faintly of laundry soap, warm skin, and the lavender sachet tucked inside the drawer.

give yourself permission to have quiet days when the world outside is white and still, like the hush after snowfall, soft and thick around the house, as though the entire world had been wrapped in a warm layer of vanilla sponge.

3. feast on the world with all your senses

i think one of the sweetest ways to reconnect with this energy is by treating all of your senses like precious little guests at a beautiful feast.

  • taste life fully: drink water like it’s honey for your veins, eat your favorite treats like a ceremony, taste the sweetness of fresh berries, let chocolate melt on your tongue, like it’s nectar from heaven.

  • touch life fully: feel the wind and the sunlight on your skin, feel the fabric of the clothes you’re wearing, dig in the soil and make your hands dirty, pet those little cats on the street

  • inhale life fully: Inhale lavender, cinnamon, fresh bread, summer grass, every scent is a hug, a caress, a reminder you are alive. Taste the air in the morning, cool and sweet, and imagine it scented with spun sugar and fresh apples.

  • watch life fully: birds, clouds, petals unfurling, shadows dancing, collect sunlight in your morning cup of tea.

  • move freely: feel the breeze sliding through your fingers, twirl, spin, skip, stretch, dance to beautiful music.

  • collect life’s free little gifts: buttons, feathers, stones, flowers, notes.

  • give away joy freely: gift others your art, letters, poems, songs. Let your joy leak into the world, and it will return to you amplified.

keep yourself busy doing angel activities like these as often as you can, they are a seed of joy, and when nurtured, they can help you shed your human skin and reveal your childlike soul.

to feast on life’s sensory pleasures is not indulgence!! it is nourishment, the currency of your joy, and it is essential for your survival. Let yourself sip, taste, touch, hear, and see with abandon. Treat your senses like royalty, let them soak in life like a dessert buffet you can’t wait to devour. Life is a banquet of tiny miracles, and you just need to train your senses to notice them again.

4. notice how much you get for free

a while ago, I was walking through a forest and suddenly had the strangest thought: I am allowed to be here for free.

and i started to realize about how gifted I was to be able to step into that beautiful place and listen to that bird orchestra literally for free, no ticket, checkout screen, or time limit, how I could literally spend my entire day there for free if I wanted. And I truly, truly felt like the happiest girl in the world, so endlessly grateful.

just imagine if you got to walk in this world for the very first time ever, wouldn’t you just be mind-blown by all of this beauty that life offers to you for free? the entire world is a series of miracles, but we’re so used to them we call them 'ordinary things'. Look at the moon! Watch the clouds drift like spun sugar across a sapphire sky! Lean into the fragrance of a flower, the crunch of a fresh apple, the first sip of tea as if it were honeyed sunlight in a cup! stop missing the miracles that are already there.

let yourself become more easily impressed, let’s become full of gratitude.

5. express your joy fully

did you know that joy, when held back and not expressed, can turn into a negative emotion, almost like grief?

just like sadness or anger, joy is an energy that needs to be felt and expressed; it needs to move through the body instead of being swallowed down and left sitting there. I was genuinely surprised when I learned this, because I had always thought this only applied to negative emotions, but apparently even happiness can build up and begin to feel like stress in the body when we don't allow ourselves to express it properly. All emotions are meant to move through us, and fully experiencing them and giving them somewhere to go turns out to be essential for staying healthy and happy.

so, when joy arrives, let it arrive completely. Don't immediately tuck it away because it seems too silly, too small, too childish, or too much. Let your happiness spill out like whipped cream over warm strawberries, like honey slowly dripping from a spoon. Clap for yourself when you complete a small task. Make cute little noises when you feel safe and comfortable. Squeal when chocolate melts on your tongue. Get ridiculously excited about the first sip of tea, a little doodle you've just finished, an email you've finally sent, the sight of a beautiful building or a particularly gorgeous tree. Grin from ear to ear. Wave your arms in the air. Wiggle. Laugh. Scream YIPPEE! Give yourself permission to squeal and celebrate when you feel that little rush of happiness moving through you.

and if you're in an environment where people don't particularly want to celebrate with you, I highly recommend using what I call a celebration amplifier: a small external helper that reflects your joy back to you. It could be a tiny two-minute dance you do whenever something makes you happy, or a celebration playlist filled with the most uplifting songs you know. You can also watch videos of weddings, flash mobs, surprise reunions, or enormous crowds suddenly bursting into cheers, anything where the happiness of other people comes rushing back at you in a great, noisy wave. Sometimes it is surprisingly satisfying to watch other people scream, laugh, cry, jump around, hug each other, and completely lose their composure over something wonderful.

allow yourself to celebrate every little ripple of joy, let your happiness amplify itself, echoing back to you from everything you do or consume. Once you start celebrating small things, you will notice more of them, and your days will begin to fill with tiny sparkles of happiness.

6. be 'embarrassing'

red cheeks, flushed like roastd peaches in the sun? Wear them happily. They are proof that you’re alive, and that you’re daring to feel deeply.

there’s something so incredibly liberating when you allow yourself to appear silly or weird in front of others. Not performative silly, but the kind that naturally appears when you stop monitoring yourself when you stop trying to control what others think of you. for example, not taking your phone out while waiting in line or sitting in the bus, but just standing there silently and looking around humming your favorite song lyrics or made-up melodies while grocery shopping, asking questions no one else dares to ask, because they’re considered ‹common knowledge›. People may think you’re weird.

let them. embrace that little rush of warmth spreading across your face when you have said or done something too honestly.

and here’s the thing: I think that embracing embarrassment is one of the fastest ways back to your authentic self, because it can free you from a rehearsed, boring life. I like thinking of this as a way of participating in the world without a script. it opens you up to a life full of possibilities and potential. You stop performing adulthood and start inhabiting yourself again. You start trying more things. You become curious instead of cautious.

the willingness to look slightly foolish and strange to others is the price to finding your way back to your authentic self. Lean into it, and sweetness will follow, soft and warm like marshmallows melting in hot chocolate.

reclaim your wonder

happiness feels alive, like butter melting into a hot croissant, warm and uncontainable. And it’s yours. Let it coat your life like honey over warm toast. Your joy is a banquet you can feast on endlessly, and the more you indulge, the more it grows.
